Bring the charm of a Dutch café to your kitchen with these flaky Berry Cream Cheese Danishes, made with buttery puff pastry, sweet cream cheese, fresh berries, and a bright lemon glaze. They're an easy bakery-style breakfast or brunch that's elegant enough for guests but simple enough for busy mornings. Perfect with a hot cup of coffee when you want a little European café escape without leaving home.

Ingredients

  • 1 each packaged cream cheese
  • 3 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
  • 3 tablespoon apple jelly
  • 1/2 teaspoon warm water
  • 1 package frozen puff pastry sheets
  • 12 ounce fresh berries
  • 1 each egg
  • 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup toasted sliced almonds

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Stir together cream cheese, granulated sugar, vanilla, and lemon zest in a medium bowl until smooth, then set aside.
  3. Whisk apple jelly in a separate medium bowl until mostly smooth, adding 1/2 teaspoon warm water if needed.
  4. Unfold 1 puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 10- x 11-inch rectangle; cut into quarters. Place pastry rectangles 1/2 inch apart on a parchment paper-lined rimmed baking sheet.
  5. Spread half of the cream cheese mixture within the border of each pastry rectangle.
  6. Arrange fruit over the cream cheese topped dough rectangles.
  7. Brush pastry edges with beaten egg.
  8. Bake until edges and bottoms are golden brown, 22 to 30 minutes.
  9. Cover loosely with foil during the last 5 minutes of baking to prevent overbrowning.
  10. Let cool on pan for 10 minutes.
  11. Meanwhile, stir powdered sugar and lemon juice together to make icing.
  12. Drizzle icing over pastries and sprinkle with almonds.
